It was a busy week for Canadian football supporters with news coming in from everywhere.
First off the CSA their male and female Canadian players of the year. Christine Sinclair won the award in the female category , and Julian De Guzman in the male category. I agree with both choices which isn't usually the case with the CSA. I think that Sinclair was Canada's best player at the Olympics and although Tancredi scored the goal that put the girls through, Sinclair's performances at the Olympics were deserving of the award. Her goal against the United States in the quarter final was my highlight of the year on the women's side. I also think De Guzman deserved player of the year on the men's side. As I've said earlier his club performances with Deportivo last season were incredible. Seeing a Canadian perform so well at such a high club level is something new and deserves to be rewarded.
Secondly Montreal Impact supporters got some good news when it was announced that the first leg of their quarter-final against Santos will be played in Montreal at the Olympic Stadium. Hopefully Montreal can fill up the stadium with a loud, pro-Montreal crowd. The Impact say they hope to reach the 30,000 mark which I think is reasonable.
Finally we have some depressing news from the Voyageurs. "Ed" conducted an interview with Peter Montopoli the General Secretary of the CSA. It is worth reading for some very interesting bits of information, but the one that stands out the most to me is this:
Voyageurs: “Can you say whether Dale Mitchell be the coach of the Canadian Men’s Team at the Gold Cup?”
P.M.: “Yes, Dale will be in charge.”
Wow... this truly shows the ineptitude of the CSA. After one of the worst World Cup Qualifying campaigns Canada has had in recent history, the CSA are going to keep on the coach! With the expectations Canada had going into the tournament I don't care if it is the coaches fault or not, he needs to go. Some change needs to happen in order to prepare for 2014. Julian mentioned in his interview a few days a go.
Well from what I'm use to out here, if the team lacks results and bringing in poor performances, coaches and players get replaced.
In any other country the coach would be fired the day after the country was eliminated, but instead he is staying on for the country's regional tournament. It's sickening.

I was also a bit put off by Montpoli's answer about Dale Mitchell. However, if there were plans have him replaced before the Gold Cup, I'd hardly expect the association to announce them in an interview with an online supporters group.
If Montopoli wasn't absolutely certain that Dale would be the coach, I think he would have given a more elusive answer. I think its pretty set in stone :(
