World Cup player to watch - England

The unrealistic expectations placed on England by their fans and media is a common feature of every World Cup that the Three Lions qualify for. They have reached one semi final since lifting the trophy in 1966, but the imminent hysteria is for once not totally outlandish, and this is for one reason only: the form of Wayne Rooney.

The John Terry-Wayne Bridge fiasco and Ashley Cole injury concern, combined with leaked tactical discussions has seemingly made Fabio Capello’s preparation for the Football world cup 2010 a nightmare, but the presence of Rooney in his team justifies some optimism.

He is the world’s most in-form striker and his red-hot streak – 30 goals for Manchester United this season so far, the second highest scorer in UEFA qualifying – needs to be taken seriously. If England can keep the goals out, then World Cup betting 2010 experts suggest that Rooney can guarantee they will be scored at the other end.

His consistency for club and country is currently unmatched around the world, with no striker reaching his level of performance, at so high a standard, so often. If Manchester United fans fear they have a one-man team, then England’s followers revel in it – as long as their talisman remains injury-free, of course.

Rooney has added a new dimension to his game this season that has coincided to his move centrally to an out-and-out centre forward. He is no longer wasted on the wing by Air Alex Ferguson and has thrived on being the main man, as he is for England.

Headers and tap-ins have been added to an all-round game that makes him England’s main creative threat as well as their principal goal source. He has the special something that World Cup stars need, but it remains to be seen whether it is enough to carry his team to glory.
